Vocabulary: Title screen
The very first step when you start a game is of course the title screen and its menu. It’s so obvious we sometimes overlook this step and get straight into the game. However, there can be quite a few selections to make in some games and the first time you see such a menu in japanese, it can get a bit confusing. Since we have to start somewhere, here’s some of the most frequent entries in those menus.
はじめから
One of the 2 most common ways to start a game the first time. It’s read hajime kara and literally means “from the start”, or “from the beginning”. This is the equivalent of our “New game”, “Start game”, etc…
ニューゲーム
A more “western” way of doing it by taking the english words as base and turning them into japanese words with katakana. It’s read nyūgēmu and is the transcription of “New game”, as you should kind of recognize when saying it out loud. I sounds differently than english because the whole process of such words is turning foreign words into an equivalent with only sounds that exist in japanese. Once you meet enough of these you start getting used to it and recognize the original words instinctively.
つづきから
One of the 2 most common ways to continue a game from the latest save. It’s read tsuzuki kara and can be translated by “continue”.
ロード
You’re gonna find this one A LOT in games so better remember it for life right away ^^. It’s read rōdo and is the transcription of the word “Load”. It’s easy to remember and as you can guess extremely common in every type of game so you’ll learn this one without even trying.
設定
Probably the first 2 kanjis you’ll meet in a menu, but you’ll see them very often so it’s good the recognize them early on. This word is read settei and means “Settings”. You’ll find it in most title screens and in game menus.
オプション
The english based little brother of 設定. It’s read opushon and is the transcription of “Option”.
